When it’s not a match.

Interviews – they can be tricky especially when the rose-coloured glasses of my youth have been replaced with practical progressive lenses. I find myself caught between speaking the lived truth and speaking what the rest want to hear. By now – if you know me, you will know which path I choose.

Management strategies proliferate across the internet, offering insights and tactics for optimizing workplace dynamics, boosting productivity, and enhancing employee engagement. While many of these strategies are well-researched and effective within their original contexts, they often fall short when directly applied to the Caribbean workplace. Trinidad and Tobago, for example, has a unique historical, socio-cultural, and economic landscape that requires a nuanced approach – one that considers its deep-rooted complexities.

The Caribbean’s history is marked by colonization, slavery, and indentured labour, which have created deep-seated social and economic divides. The legacies of these historical injustices still permeate contemporary Caribbean societies, manifesting in persistent inequalities and tensions between historically privileged groups and those who have been historically disenfranchised.

In many Caribbean countries, the descendants of colonizers and enslaved people live in the same spaces but often under very different socio-economic conditions. These historical divides are not just economic but also psychological and cultural. Management strategies imported from countries with different historical contexts often fail to address these complex layers of inequality and mistrust, which can significantly impact workplace dynamics.

Trinidad is a mosaic of ethnicities, including African, Indian, European, Chinese, and indigenous peoples. This diversity, while culturally rich, is often accompanied by racial and ethnic tensions that can complicate management practices. Racism and colourism remain prevalent issues that affect hiring practices, promotions, team dynamics, and overall workplace morale.

Management strategies must be sensitive to these racial and ethnic nuances. Generic management advice that does not take into account the specific historical and racial contexts can inadvertently exacerbate existing tensions. Effective management requires an understanding of how historical prejudices and systemic racism continue to influence interpersonal relationships and organizational structures.

As a consultant, the historical, socio-cultural, and economic complexities of the region profoundly impact my daily decisions and the way I engage with clients and stakeholders. Understanding these factors is crucial for devising effective management strategies and fostering productive workplace environments.

When choosing whom to engage with, I consider individuals and organizations that demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion. I collaborate with those who understand the importance of addressing racial and ethnic tensions and are willing to implement policies that promote a respectful and inclusive work environment. I prefer to promote leadership styles that emphasize collaboration and mutual respect rather than authoritative, top-down approaches. I prioritize collaboration with local subject matter experts and stakeholders who bring valuable insights into the socio-cultural and economic landscape. This collaborative approach ensures that the solutions I propose are grounded in local realities.

I would like to read more about all of our people and from more of a variety of our people. By understanding and integrating the region’s historical, socio-cultural, and economic realities, we can develop and implement management strategies that are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and equitable. We can compare notes, we can learn from our missteps. We can be real, can’t we? This approach ensures that our engagements with clients and stakeholders are meaningful, impactful, and conducive to fostering a thriving workplace environment in the Caribbean.
